mounting telephoto lenses on Nikon rangefinders |

Stupid question number 147. Forgetting about framing the image, theoretically can the longer Nikkor telephoto lenses (longer than 135mm) be mounted directly onto rangefinder bodies (without the use of the reflex housing attachment) and be used for shooting? In other words are they mechanically functional without the reflex housing attachment? Please and thank you. |

you would need a spacer for the distance of the reflex housing, and an auxiliary finder, for composing, the lenses like the 18cm, 25cm were made for use with
the reflex housing there is a n-f adapter for using the lenses on a nikon f, the n-f is approx 55mm , there is a version for putting the long lenses on a lsm
camera without the housing similar to the n-f adapter,

The 180 Nikkor would not mount on a Nikon Rf camera. Mount is too broad. You might be able to get the 250 and 500 mounted, but the focus would be so far beyond
infinity it would be pointless to try. As Jim pointed out, you would need a spacer that is the depth of the reflex housing. And a finder. And a way to focus
it. WES

So the short answer is no.
Guess I'll just continue to use my SLRs and Nikkors for anything longer than 135, and keep to the shorter focal lengths with the rangefinders. Thanks for the quick and knowledgeable replies. |

You can use with semplicity the CV F-S adapter, but is impossible to find, i'm be able to build one, if you like i can build one for you.
But you have to consider that these adapter, made for mount short F lens on S body, no coupling focus is possible with rangefinder. In my experience i use 20mm lens, 50mm f 1,4 and occasionally 85, 135 and 105, never used 180 or more, but teorically is possible with infinity focus, obviusly you have to use the metric/feet scale. To finish, also if i use a good external finder, i often cut...legs, heads ecc.ecc.

Yes, I have F-S adapter from Steve Gandy before they sold out. I have experimented with mounting various F mount lenses, discovering that, in most cases where
lenses are AI-deep or AIS, they will not fit without interference. I HAVE however mounted even the 50-300 zoom, though scale focus is only solution. Far easier
to use more modern camera as distance finder and the largest possible shoe mount viewfinder for attempt at composition.
