This is the worst buy of the week :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eB...EWAX:IT&item=260359416681 The finder is not original. It's a late (77-79) DE-1 with early pebble leatherette on. Obviously someone made it to match the body. |

Sover wrote:There were no claims as to the originality of the DE-1 I doubt very much Jose knew the difference! Sover is simply assuming by looking at the pictures, are you sure? Late model DE-1s are worth more than the early ones.... It would have gone over $2k anyway

There are always sellers knowingly and unknowingly sell bad/fake stuff on eBay, eg my water damaged F2AS and the fake F2T. (It is probably that the F2T seller
really didn't know it's a fake.)
The purpose of worst buy of the week is not to disgrace or expose sellers. It's really to show how some people paid too much for items when they could have paid a lot less if they had waited or shop around. $2000 would be correct for a mint boxed black F2AS, but not for a mint earlish chrome F2 with an incorrect finder. If worst buy of the week is not a good idea, then Fred please remove it. However, the fact that there are more people looking at this thread than the fake F2T thread, does indicate it's interesting or even amusing to many people. |

Hello Kiu
You're right: I didn't know about the mismatched body-finder era, and I even told Sover about this particular auction while it was still running because, as a rare fact, one of the bidders for this F2 resulted to be customer of both Sover and me (bidder and myself got some nice tips from Sover, of course). Life is a learning process on a daily basis, and now I know that earlier Eyelevels did not have gaskets, although I have never seen one of them. Have a nice week. Jose.

Being a reputable seller, just about everything Jose sells gets a premium. here's an example:
$43.00 I may think a plastic base cover for an F3 is worth five bucks but apparently I am in a minority here... The buyer decides what they want to pay and that's the end of the story, doesn't matter what we think. I hope Jose doesn't end up as the hot topic in this thread

It seems this thread has gone completely off topic. This protector has nothing to do with worst buy of the week.
Original base protectors are getting scarce, so people are willing to pay prices. However, this protector would only worth a dollar if it is a recent after market mass production. Maybe I should set up a factory in China to produce F, F2 and F3 base protectors, and don't tell people they are fakes. Hmm, not a bad idea - far easier than servicing F2s, but I would loose my honour. I guess I have some Klingon blood in me : ) Indeed eBay is great for buyers to set the final price. However, would the buyer of this earlyish F2 bidded so high if knew or know now the finder is incorrect. To set the record straight, I informed Jose about it three days before the auction ended. I guess he forgot to amend the listing to reflect that. I would hate to see this early F2 come my way for service, as I would have to tell the person the truth, as I did with my customer on the fake F2T. He is still fighting for compensation, and I truely feel sorry for him. |

Webmaster note:
Many, many F2s were rebuilt here in NYC with new finders and parts, especially by Nikon in Garden city. The late black titanium F2s built up from leftover high speed parts are a classic example. I just do not believe anyone can make a definitive statement about what was sold by dealers in NYC, built up by Garden City. They assembled and remarked boxes all the time, using parts left over from the distant past. Switching finders and lenses was very common. And of course Marty Forscher was in the modification business especially when it came to F2s and pros in NYC. He routinely built panoramas, and exchanged finders for one pro friend of mine, who continued to use the F2 long after it was discontinued. You guys should relax, unless a camera has -- original documentation -- this kind of speculation about cameras built during this professional era is really impossible. No one can be definitive about what Nikon made up for sale. We can of course be pretty clear about what was listed in the catalogs, however as many of you know I bought FEAs and and FMAs from Nikon that prove anything can exist. End of note. |

SN 6403535 That's a nice serial number, Very tempting--> looks like it has a lotta replacement parts though(Finder, wind lever cover..) Funny is, if the finder is marked NK, I don't know if this one belong to this thread or the Bargain thread

Hi Steve,
What do you mean by "No finder photo in the bid"? Do you mean you couldn't see the finder in the photos of the listing? I didn't bid and I didn't win. Jim is the one who gambled
