Is there such a thing? Are there Modern Nikkor collectibles after the Rangefinder and early F era? If you think so, add your choice, making sure the lens was introduced after the Nikon F era. In the total production line of Nikon there are several items which are reflecting certain developments in Nikon's history in general and in general photography in particular, making them collectible. The first zoom-lens, the first compact camera (L35AF), the first digital compact camera (Coolpix 100), the first camera with VR (105VR), the first digital SLR (D1), the first.............., but also the last! What about the Nikonos RS-outfit, certain Mirror-optics, the Noct-Nikkor, some Cine-Nikkors, the Nikomat/Nikkormat slide projector, and a variety of (low production) lenses? I know that most of the NHS-members are focused on RF & F gear, but there are other interesting items which give pleasure in using and/or collecting them. You'll find some on my website. Posts: 39 (11/29/2008 08:25 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Kiu - I would suggest to you that the following Nikkors will be looked back upon as "classics," some because of limited production, some due to outstanding performance, and some because people generally have no idea what they aere talking about, and will throw money at a perceived "classic." Some of the following could be worth considerable sums in the future (some, like #1, are fetching outrageous sums now!) because of more than one of the reasons: 1) AF-Nikkor 28mm 1.4D ASPH (Bought mine in '01 for $1700 for which I knew I was being raped. Seen USED ones on Ebay lately? $4700! Reason: low production numbers; STUPID SHEEP PEOPLE.) 2) AF-Nikkor 14mm 2.8D ED (Reason: Excellent performer; Low production numbers) 3) AF-Nikkor 105mm 2D DC (Reason: Unique DC feature; supreme performance; low build numbers at c. 20000 in 15 years) 4) AF-Nikkor 135mm 2D DC (Reason: same as 105 DC) 5) AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8D ED (Low numbers, supreme performance, was expensive and hard to find throughout its short lfe) As far as cameras? I'd say that late model F5s might have a tad added value (they already do compared to their equivalent Canon models.) Will be seen histirically as the pinnacle of 35mm SLRS. Then again, I use three of them professionally still for head-shots and portraiture, so I'm biased! : )) Nikon F5A was the only F5 variant, plus only 3000 were made WORLDWIDE. The F6 will be a classic for no other reason that NO ONE BOUGHT THEM, therefore low numbers, last F-type (probably) D3x sound too good to be true. With a stratosperic price tag, few will be mint in 25 years, as only pros will use them, and beat the crap out of them. Buy one now if you can afford it, bury it in your back yard like a time capsule and dig it up in 2034. Big money on Interplanetary Ebay! Then again, what do I know. What do you guys think? Rob

One day, 25 years from now, a D3x, which isn't even out yet, will be an antique. So in the future, the 14, 15... they will all be old enough one day. Out of curiosity, why did you pick out the 80-200? Next to the 28 1.4, it had the lowest numbers of all the lenses I mentioned. And how people talk about it now in legendary terms! I thought you would have picked the 135 to say nay on. R

The D3X isn't any different from other professional DSLR in the past. These days, you can find a nice D1 body for around $200. I'll bet that the $5000 (or whatever) D3X will sell for a few hundred dollars a few years from now. Jarle

I don't know much about the current MF Nikkor catalog, having gone AF with my purchase of an F4s in 1988. In fact, I never used a single lens on your list when I was using F3's back in the 80'S! I would agree with your interest in MF Nikkors, as I always loved their solidity and superb craftsmanship, which are still superior to all but a few lenses in the AF catalog. I can only think of a few AF lenses that are on par with the construction of a MF Nikkor, those being the crinkle-finish AF lenses such as the 28 1.4D. Enjoy your MF's, friend. R

I explicitly asked for modern Nikkors...The 15mm f3.5 is more qualified! Those other lenses are just fancy numbers, most are Industrial Nikkor meant to be mounted on repreoduction machines. Perhaps I would draw the line at any models currently in production, but anything that is no longer made is fair game for a collector (stocking up on current models may actually be a good strategy, if you are planning to live long enough to see them go out of production). For instance, I decided to collect EL-Nikkors complete of original packaging, in spite of most models being easily available - and actually because of this, since I don't want to spend large amounts of money on my collection, I don't want to chase rare items forever, and I don't want to collect what everybody else does. With EL-Nikkors, I can have a realistic goal of collecting all or almost all models within a few years. There are about 30-40 of them, including variations in packaging, so it is neither too big nor too small a goal. Some EL-Nikkors turn out to be quite difficult to find or expensive (early tick-mark models, long focal lengths), but I can wait them out - I am not in a hurry. Once in a while, the "right" item comes up on eBay and no one else notices. Occasionally I also buy special-purpose Nikkor lenses from other series, just for the fun of it.

I feel that most collectors are going for very rare products hoping that the value of those items will go up in near future. In many discussions - also on this site - people are talking about money not about cameras or lenses. I am not investing in (photography) collectibles and I am not trying to collect everthing Nikon produced, because that's utopia. I have a few RF items, some compacts and SLR's of the film and digital era (not only Nikon) of which I think they reflect some interesting developments in photography. It is the same in collecting stamps: to get the whole world together is impossible, but the reflection of a country's history in a stamp collection is very interesting. So concentrate on a specific era or item (see my 55mm/1.2 madness). After all I don't care whether my collection will gain an enormous amount of money after I've left this world. I know a Nikon collector (wellknown NHS-member) in my neighbourhood who has to keep his collectibles in a bank safe!! What a fun!!. Esavazzi: continue to collect the EL-Nikkors and tell us all about it. I also know a guy in Denmark collecting lens caps only. Fantastic! Happy collecting! Nico www.nicovandijk.net

As for myself, I have a Nikon EM outfit with its prime lenses and I am proud of that collection! Ok, most of the Black Motorised Nikon SP owners, 1,1 attached, will wrinkle their noses. Kiu's little zoom could be a fine addition to my EM collection!
