I've got a Nikkor 300 2.8 ED AIS manual focus telephoto that I purchased used years ago from Canadian Press News Service, and while I always use it with
the hood attached, I'm still concerned that the "naked" front element is susceptable to potential impact damage. However, it appears that the
lens has no provision for a screw in front filter. Is this correct, that is, was a version of this lens made without front threads to accept a filter, or am I
missing a part? Please and thank you.

I believe your lens uses a "drop-in" filter.

Yes it does. It takes 39mm drop-ins, but I'm referring to a 112mm(?) filter to protect the front element. |

I used this lens myself, many years ago. I don't think you can attach a front filter, but I believe the front "lens element" is supposed to
protect the lens - i.e. it's replaceable. Probably pretty expensive, and obviously not as simple as replacing a regular screw-in filter.

Ahhh. That's the answer I was looking for. Now at least I know that I'm not missing a threaded part or whatever. The lens hood is deep enough to keep most things from bumping up against the front element anyway, so except for wiping off the odd bit of dust, or raindrops, I think the front element is fairly safe.
