early F lenses |

I suppose there isn't a lot of interest amongst collectors in early F lenses. These 2 didn't sell for very much on eBay... or I suppose most collectors
don't really look for stuff a lot on eBay? What do y'all think?

There is tons of interest, especially regarding Nikon F early stuff!
The 2.8cm Pete sold for $160 normally does $25!!! You think there is no interest? Looke here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320229910154 Put a tick mark on the lens and the price goes tru the roof.... Pete is pretty lousy with the description too. One liners rule with Pete!! Kiu |

I just feel based on my collecting experience so far (a little over a year), not so long of course, but the probability of finding these items is so low that
they ought to be worth more. I've seen your posts a few times with regard to high selling F's on eBay and I think the items that go high maybe because
of the auction fever or whatever are the ones that seem fair to me as a collector and occasional seller. As far as interest, I do expect it to go up when the F
mount turns 50 and I think prices should also go up simply because of the supremecy and mastery of cameras by Nikon put forth again with the unprecedented D3.
And the fact that you can put a 49 year old Nikkor on that D3! It's all supply and demand though, and I'm just not happy with what I can get for my
Nikon collectible gear and how hard I've worked to get it. I have a 6406924 F right now in real nice shape except for an unfortunate engraving by someone
below the advance lever... so I dunno how much I could get for it but I bet that I'll find I rather just keep it on my bookshelf. It has an original prism
in real nice shape also- of which there were only about 8000 made, most of them mated to a collector's body, dented, or destroyed. I also have an
individual prism of the same origin I've thought about selling (I'm also iffy about that too because as I'd said I do think prices will go up some,
and if I find an early body w/o an original prism I'll be glad I kept it). I also didn't get much interest in my 28mm f/4 PC, a landmark lens with
perfect glass and one of the 1st 350... So that's why I made that comment. If I'd had a few hundred bucks lying around at the time I definitely would
have bought those early lenses.

The bidding on e-bay appears to be so random at times. Items that I'm sure will get great attention go virtually unnoticed & other more common items, bring super inflated prices. Go figure⦠Recently there was a mint (& it really is mint) 35/3.5 PC lens, the 453rd made, that only received one bid of $259 (that was my bid). I found it hard to believe that no one else had an interest in this historical lens. Then again, there are those cases where some one will list an item with a "Buy it Now" price & in a bidding frenzy, it will be bid up beyond that price. What's worst it will often be bid even higher than the price you could buy it for from a retailer's used camera department.
When it comes to early Nikkor lenses, Nikon F cameras & related equipment, I'm more than happy to purchase these items when they appear on e-bay. I
just wish they would show up more often than they do. It takes so much of my time sorting through the volumes of "stuff" just to find that single
quality item & perhaps that is why a lens like that early 35mm PC ended with just one bid. It simply got lost in all the ads for terminal covers, camera
storm jackets, handgrips & straps... |

I think you are right on about this mynikonf2... I mean this is why I still look at F stuff on eBay even when I'm not thinking of buying anything in
particular. I would have loved to bid on that PC you got... congratulations BTW, but anyway as you've said I just don't have time to be looking for
such things and find them whenever they come up. The early lenses I commented on before though, specifically early 2.8cm and 3.5cm lenses, were bid on by 15-
20 people. And as NikonKiu stated, they did sell several times more than the cost of your average such non-ai Nikkor. So I think this collecting stuff is very
hit and miss, the prices do vary on eBay for the reasons you specified, but as I contended initially there is only so much interest in this stuff. Although an
item may be super rare, that doesn't mean it will sell for a whole lot... maybe so if you find the right rich guy... but in general only a few collectable
F items (and this personally I find the most interesting thing to collect and also the most intrinsically valuable because of the impact of the F line on
photography) really command the high prices, which I believe one can argue are commensurate with the effort that goes into learning about them and finding
them. I understand this is a wholly subjective opinion...
