Lead | |
|
Hello! I am an former NHS member but new to this forum. Years ago I acquired a Micro-Nikkor 70mm f5 lens. It has a Leica screw thread instaed of the F mount.
Howver I have not been able to find it catalogued anywhere. Can anyone please tell me what was it made for, and when? Does it have any particular
characteristics?

Hi vk3al,
its a Micro-Nikkor for special applications... comes with correction for aberration at its standard reproduction ratio. there is absolutely no vignetting even if the lens is stopped down, because the front and rear element groups are larger then dimensional aperture of the lens.... distortion 0.3 % picture angle 43° image size 55.2 mm usable magnification rate 1/30x-1/5x there are two versions of this lens that I know... what serial number do you have? :-) |

How would you differentiate these two versions?

Many thanks for your informative replies. The serial number of my lens is 705125. The focal length is given as 70mm (not 7cm) so it would appear t be the
later version. It has a 7 blade diaphragm I will post a photo IDC. vk3al

If it's marked Nippon Kogaku and it's in milimeters, that narrows down the date of manufacture. BTW, WELCOME to vk3al and artinnik

Hi Kiu,
my serial of the 70mm lens is : 370133. It has a 8 blade diaphgram. The other 7cm lens has only 4 digit serial number. :-) artinnik |

I have number 705152. I thought they were made for use on the Multiphot macro cameras, before the 120 mm Macro Nikkor was available. Am I wrong?

John, why would a 70mm lens be replaced by a later 120mm lens (IF, it would have been the 65mm Macro Nikkor) - I don't get that....
In my understanding the 70mm (and the also existing 150mm) where made for micro-repoduction from what I remember. Cheers, Klaus |

Klaus, I did wonder that myself, but I bought one on a Multiphot years ago, so that influenced my thinking. Also, I wonder why Nikon called their macro lenses
for 35 mm photography "Micro Nikkors", but "Macro Nikkors" for those designed also for large format use. Strange!
Does anyone have any literature on these lenses? Regards, John |

micro vs. macro | ||

Why did Nikon call it "Micro Nikkor" instead of a Macro Nikkor? The answer is technical honesty. Photomacrography refers to taking pictures at
greater than life-size. Photomicrography is taking at reductions. Macro photography and micro photography are entirely different. Anyway, The Macro Nikkors (as
sold for use on the Multiphot stand) are for picture-taking in the true macro range of greater than life size. The Micro-Nikkor, in its standard configuration,
only goes down to lifesize. It is not a macro lens. The original Micro Nikkor was designed for reductions in the 1/12 ratio for microfilm creation, hence the
name "Micro Nikkor." Hope this makes sense. WES

@Wes: Very helpful and good Wes. Yes, what you say is also my state of knowledge, micro is < 1:1, macro is 1:1...50:1, then the (wide) field of microscopy
starts.
@John: there was an old Nikon Brochure "Photoengraving Lenses" where that 70mm and the 150mm Micro Nikkor were mentioned. Klaus |
