I saw a Nikon/Contax RF to Leica M adapter on that auction site. Does this mean that I can use an Epson RD1 with my Nikon RF lens and have a digital Nikon RF
camera of sorts? The M8 needs some sort of serial communication between lens and body if I recall correctly.

There are a series of small squares which tell the camera what lens (leica secret code) is mounted. This allows the camera to do some preprocessing (tweaking)
of the image. Without the coding you just get the plain vanilla file(no preprocessing).
I do not own an M8, but that is what I understand it to be. B2 (;-> |

I use a Nikon/Contax RF to M adapter on my RD1, and I get a "digital Nikon RF".
The Leica M8 can also be used, but I don't own one. As for the "lens coding", it is used on the M8, only to refine the processing. It is not mandatory. Bill is correct in his explanation. So far, I have found that certain lenses don't work with the adapter: 1. 3.5cm f1.8 is too large to fit the opening of the RD1 camera, don't know for the M8 2. 50mm f1.1 internal mount doesn't fit properly on my adapter, but there may be variations with different adapters.
