Jun Miki's Nikon I was probably the first black-painted Nikon. He had it painted at the factory sometime in late 1950 or early 1951.
The "Life" Nikon that started this thread did belong to Carl Mydans, and appears to be a special "press" or "Life"version, but it would not have been one of the first twenty that were ordered by Life in the fall of 1950. It is probably one ordered by Life in 1951. Carl was still using Contaxes when he arrived back in Japan in 1950, but any Nikons bought by Life, or even secured by Mydans in 1950 would still have had the "M" before the serial number, and we do not know if those were black or not, or even who got them. Still, this is a special camera and indication again as to NK's willingness to accommodate the special requests of publications, even before Ehrenreich. I am happy that this support letter showed up.
