Using old lenses on DSLR? |
Lead | |
|
I have original F lenses from 20mm to 200mm that I had converted to AI. Is there any reason not to use these on a D80? I know that I have to meter these
manually. I also have a non-Nikon reflex lens that has an Nikon adapter (I think these were called C mounts), can this be safely used on the D80? Thanks.

I use Nikkors on an Olympus 4/3 Evolt-500 with Fotodiox adapter. I have great luck using aperture preferred mode or full manual, by the way crop factor on 4/3
system is 2x. Certain older Nikkors that have a thick baffle around the rear group do not work as they do not bayonet onto the adapter or interfer with gold
contacts on the camera body! By the way it makes no difference whether the lenses are Non AI, AI, or AIS or even AF, however G lenses do not work. I still use
Nikkors primarily with my early Nikon F ca 1959, my F-36 ca 1967 and my black F2 with DP-1 ca 1977. Long live film!

the G series lenses do not have the (f stop) ring on the lens. if you set the Fstop inside the camera then you can use the lens. the g series lenses cannot
be used on the F, F2,f3, and others (can't remember them all)

Actually I think it is wrong to say that the G-lenses do not work on older Nikon cameras. They will work on any Nikon body but then of course only at the
smallest apparature. Also, some of the F-bodies control the apparature electronically and then the G-lenses will work perfectly (haven“t tried but that must be
the case with for example a F90X or so !?).... but of course in practice the G-lenses are for the newer D-bodies.

it is my understanding that g lenses having no manual aperture ring will shoot wide open only on non AF Nikon cameras, thus IMHO they really are not useful on
older manual focus Nikon bodies!!
