Ai or not AI | ||
|
Hi,
in principle you can mount any Nikkor with a F-mount ( AI, AIS, AF etc.) on a Nikon D200. If you enter the aperture and focal length of any AI/S-lens in the software of the camera the camera will 'see' the lens and will be able to measure. All non-AI lenses can't be mounted as the lightmeter won't work. Some lenses may fit but be careful with the lens mount. In your case it is possible to mount a 55mm/1.2 AI (an AIS version doesn't exist) on a D200. Regards, Nico |

can the lens be mounted on the camera, if it can swith it to full manual and shoot away, i use Ais lenses on a d-70 in full manual, either with a hand held light meter or shoot, adjust then delete the bad exposure.
I've used the 55,105 & 200 micro Ais lenses on the d-70 with no problems jim |

Am I missing something? The question was about a non-AI lens.
Non-AI lenses cannot be used with the D200. Jarle |

As I said, Jarle, non-AI lenses cannot be used. You can mount them but the lightmeter and other programs will not work. You can take a picture and given the result you can change the settings, but that is not the real thing.

Sorry Nico,
Missed that one. I'll read the entire reply next time.. According to the D200 manual, non-AI lenses cannot be used. I would not mount a non-AI lens on a modern DSLR. Manual focus AIS-lenses, on the other hand, I use all the time. Just bought a dirt cheap, like new 55mm f/2.8 micro for use with my D2X. Excellent combination! (Other personal favourites include the 28mm f/2 and 85mm f/2). Jarle |

The real thing, Jim, is an expression in English for 'true' or 'correct' thing; here: the correct or true way of taking pictures. If you mount a non-AI lens on a D100, D200 etc. you can't work as you should or could with other lenses (AI/S, AF, AF-D etc.).

I must be missing something here, but I have used the 500mm f5 Nikkor in short mount on a D70, and Novoflex telephoto lenses. No problem. Set to manual, read results and proceed. A non-AI lens might not mount on a D200 due to interference with the f-stop sensor ring, but that is a physical problem. WES

Re: non-AI on D200 | ||

Don't try mounting a non-Ai lens on the D200.
The lens will cause damage to the Ai lever on the D200 body. D70s has no Ai lever and so non-Ai lens MAY be mounted. However, the sensor in the 8:00 position of the D70s lens mount may cause another problem. |

"Don't mount a non-ai lens on D200."
Ah, but it depends on the lens. I have a Nikon FM2 and F6006, both of which call for ai lenses. I can't mount my auto-nikkors which are non-ai. Won't go on. But the NF adaptor fits on fine, because it clears the the f-stop sensor ring. Same goes for bellows and other non-ai items. You have to experiment with each lens carefully. Some will mount, some won't. I have found that auto-Nikkors will usually not fit if they are non-ai, but almost all other items, including manual lenses will. WES |

Re: non-AI on D200 | ||

Since there seems to be no official response and since I don't have a D200
According to the manual Non-Ai lenses CANNOT be used...as said before, the deep mounting flange on these lenses can damage the D200. Only AI modified and newer lenses can be mounted. I know the question came from someone who's hoping for a 87.5mm(effective) f1.2 lens on their D200 but it's not meant to be,unless Nico provides the Modification kit Kiu |

Well, Kiu, you can't always believe everything you see in print. I was playing with my brother's D200 over Christmas break and doing some closeup work, and I seem to remember mounting and using some non-ai optics. But I guess I will have to check again when he visits again at the end of this month. I will let you know what the results are. WES

Official responds are OFFICIAL!!
We can't claim what is NOT printed, the reply to the question on ebay is NO. Off the record, I am not certain where the mechanical AI lever is on this camera...the user manual doesn't even mention it!!! The pictures suggest 1:00 o'clock....poster said 8:00 o'clock I have seen both...I have to ask my CO-WORKER to bring the camera, much quicker than your brother, my CO-WORKER has my 80-200VR...he owes me!! Jose,where the heck do you come up with such stuff? A MINT 55mm f1.2 in the BOX??? Nico,did you see it? Kiu |

Will it fit? | ||
|
OK Gentlemen,
as I stated before: 'some lenses may fit but be careful with the lens mount'. The lens mount of a D200 has a latch to couple with (the internal light meter of) the AI/S mount of AI/S-lenses. If you use a non-AI/S lens there will be no coupling; whether you enter the lens data in the camera's software or not. So: there will be no metering or other possibility to use the camera's programs. But the lens will still fit as it has the F-mount. Some non-AI/S-lenses have a mount flange that leaves space for the AI/S-coupling latch at the camera mount. But you have to be careful not to touch that latch. I have a few (non-AI) 55mm/1,2 lenses that fit that way. BUT: There is a second problem, that is the contact of the lens mount with the elctronic contacts in the mount of the camera. That may cause even more damage to the camera. So: non-AI/S-lenses 'officially' (see camera manual) do not fit, but if you are very careful (don't move the coupling latch and don't touch the electronic contacts) a certain lens may fit. The camera manual doesn't say that e.g. an old Reflex-Nikkor or an old PC-Nikkor can't be used, which is odd. It is a pitty that Nikon didn't give the D-SLR's a folding latch (like the F4, F3 etc.) in order to mount older lenses. It's even dreadful and a big flop that Nikon didn't give the FM3a such a coupling mechanism (the FM/FE has one); that would make it possible to mount all Nikkors ever produced on a modern camera. Unfortunately the latch+ring of a FM/FE or F3 doesn't fit a FM3a. Regards, Nico |

Dear Kiu,
I replied the D200 guy (deciding to go the safe road) suggesting him to find an AIS lens for his D200, such as a 50mm f/1.2 or a NOCT 58mm f/1.2 (this one, nowadays, might be triple the money of a D200... and should be 5x the D200 value within this year Thanks you all for the great thread. Many doubts were solved here. Jose. |

Prototype? | ||

Sorry Kiu (and Pete), but the lens for sale is NOT a prototype lens!! The first series started with serial number 970111 and went up to 985xxx. Lenses with lower serial numbers (like the 970103 in many publications) might be prototypes. The lens was modified (aperture ring mainly) at # 184711, 250001 (coating and optical formula), 350011 (optical formula) and 400001 (AI-mount). A bit odd that someone like Pete Smith is using this lens description as everybody can find the real story at nikonlinks.com.

Please refer to the Nikon Pocket Book, second revised edition by Peter Braczko page 6-50. This was my Nikon bible (untill now). I took the lens off ebay and
put it on my newly won D40. Fits and works very nicely. It is a keeper. Thanks, Pete
