Totally primitive designs, clumsy and huge!
Every designer should have to spend a day holding and using an Apple iPhone. Once you have done this you understand just how really awful almost all current electronic design is. How really primitive it is. There is simply no excuse for this kind of size and weight, and clumsy display and controls on anything that costs $5000 when it can be totally eclipsed by a $500 device. Shame on Nikon... The Nikon F was a far better camera, worthy of being called a great design. |

At 12.1 effective megapixels and still the DX format, my trusty old Fuji S2 Pro match up pretty well to the D300 at less than 1/3 the price. I'll think I
can wait until they , at least, full size it.

No Kiu,
I have always hated these huge clunky cameras, no matter who makes them (canon-nikon-take your pick), and now they are not just huge and clunky, there is not longer an excuse for them. They are the SUVs of the technology industry. I am waiting for something decently small with a really fast display. Like I say look at an iPhone and get back to me, no more of those stupid menus with external button controllers for software. As for the full frame, nikon does not seem to be able to make up their mind... does it work or not, one moment they say it doesn't work well with older lenses, now they think it does. My guess it is is fair, but mostly a marketing ploy. But no matter, I guess, I am never going to own one. But knock yourselves out... I am sure lots of them will be sold, heck my neighborhood is full of Hummers. I am just not interested in a continual rehash of the F3 forever. I know some guys are. Ok -- all done. ************** I was thinking about this some more today, while I was working on my computer, and it occurred to me that the problem with Nikon's approach (and Canon) is, that in Digital there is no such thing as full frame, it is just an artificial construct. They keep hanging on to motion picture film from Edison's original Kinescope, from 1889! Basing technology in 2007 on a design from 1889 is ridiculous! It is time for some company to be brave enough to design a completely new system, with new lenses, that don't weigh a ton. The only other common use item that has not changed in 100 years is the automobile, and more importantly the format we use for it. We are still driving straight at each other, at high speeds, in machines totally alien to human flesh (glass and steel) with minor safety equipment (bags rather than proper seats, belts, and helmets). And to top it off gas mileage has dropped since the 1920's and the death/serious injury toll, per individual owner, has remained outrageously high. Admittedly a harder format to change (highways), but still a totally failing system which will only get worse. The use of film camera standards to design digital cameras is in the same mess, until they let go digital cameras will continue to be rather awful. Nikon rangefinders are elegant machines, at the top of technology in 1950~60, but what is really sad is that in practical terms (size vs quality) Nikon has not been able to improve on them much in 50 years!

Nikon's got 30 million lenses with the F mount out there...I for one am glad they haven't divorced the mount yet, they'll be sure to piss-off lotta people out there if they did and then look at Olympus with their new 4/3 and the disaster they created for themselves. Remember the beloved F? add the Photomic, a motordrive and the 8.5 to 25cm and you are not too far behind the D3 and one of these new 400mm or 500mm lenses, but look at the advantages.... You can bet Nikon is gonna sell a Boat-load of these, Nikon has been selling a boat-load of digital SLRs... according to one report they just surpassed Canon in that department!! Kiu

The only problem with a full frame is using a wide angle lens. There is a "vignette" effect on all images, a black circle around the corners. I am
not even talking about a fisheye, I am talking about using anything 28mm or wider which are so commonly used nowadays.
My wedding assistant uses a Canon with full frame, her images are driving me crazy whenever she goes wide. I can only use the very center part of the image!! John |

Nikon has to go with the market and the market demands a full frame camera with tens of megapixels...those bells and whistles are also demanded...now you are picking on them because the menus can't be accessed from the screen! The market is stupid, if we went with the "market" (meaning the mainstream manufacturers advertising) we would all still be buying CDs, instead of using iPods. People in the US get fatter every year because of "market demand" for super-sized happy meals. And yes - I am picking on any "new" display that requires external buttons, it is totally 1980's technology. I guess you can't take the VCR out of Japanese computer design. I want a camera with 10 times more pixels and only one lens. I guess we are going to have to wait until Pixar decides to build one with Apple.

You have to understand Kiu, I am not very mainstream.
1) I have not owned a car in 20 years, and only driven or ridden in one a few times. I have two bicycles. 2) I use Apple computers, and long ago disconnected my "stereo." 3) I do not own an interchangeable lens SLR or any SLR lenses. 3) I have only eaten at MacDonalds once, on the way to a camera show in New Jersey, and I threw it out the window (littering). 4) I drink Diet Coke... maybe someday I will stop. 5) I like Armani suits but I buy everything else on-line at the Gap. I avoid malls, I do go to Ikea. 6) I do shop at Target, and like it.

Hey Kiu, I deleted all my pontification, frankly I just don't like big complicated cameras. Probably not much I should say.

Full frame digital is the way to go I've used the Kodak 14n for 3 years. For architectural shots without vignetting, the benefit of the true focal length
and digital quality try it!

nikondan,
What size lens do you use for architectural shots? I wonder if the vignetting is a Canon's line of lens' problem! According to my assistant, it's a "known" problem for Canon. John |

John, I have exc results with 17-35mm AFS and my old favourite 15mm 5.6 giving wall 2 wall sharpness and no vigetting from my now vintage 14 megapixel camera.

Well, it's mid November, has anybody seen a D300 or D3 yet?
|
|||
frenchterry |
I played with them !!!! | ||
|
Yes .. I was lucky enough to play with D 3 in Paris ( last exhibit end of October)
Very nice feeling, remarkable finder .... I used it at 3200 asa .. with Noct Nikkor, 28 PC and 28 mm 1.4 ... Perfect results ... I am dying to receive mine later this month... I was missing the full frame, his depth of field and possibility of using the big range of Nikon lenses , because any F lens can fit (better AI of course) |
