Posts: 217 (11/09/2006 06:15 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I found a 5 cm f2 in black, in hte 74 xx range, but this lens has NO chrome filter ring, not even a filter ring at all. If you compare it with a normal black 5 cm f 2, you can see that instead of that chrome filter ring, there is a fitting black ring, but only the same hight as the other rings. The inside ring (closest to the lens glass) has not the same shape as on a normal black, it is slightly different It seems that some lenses lilke this were produced, but does any one knows more about this ? number made ? why was it made ? etc thanks

Alas, no, although I think one was on a chrome-dial, black S2, which would make sense. I only keep track of numbers for the items that required ground-glass focusinglike short mount lenses and copy kits. WES

A very rare and unusual variation. Indeed it is not like a 5cm f 1.4, it has NO filter ring at all, and this has not been removed. Nr is 749327

AS described on this very thread, the lens was all black but seemed to have no filter ring! I found my ringless lens at least that long ago but thought it a fluke until a collector in Japan sent me a photo of his then I saw others including one last Sunday in Holland! I think I have about 6 recorded and then numbers are dispersed. I also know of one chrome lens. There is no sign of a filter ring ever being there and the space is taken up by a nice fished black insert so it looks factory. Since to filter, shade or snap on cap cam be used I see no sense to it unless it was for a special purpose as you suggest. My all black F2 just came to me within the last year but i have looked for decades for one. I remember Burt [Rubin] finding one at the Chicago show plus there is one in the literature and I also saw one in Holland last week (which originally came on a black S2)!!!! Maybe 5-6 in my notes. I read Roto's response, all it says that this variation has been discovered 25 years ago. The fact remains that only 6 of them have been recorded! No explanation is offered! Even Bob says he is unsure why!! I don't give any credit to the Japenese collectors' claim, most fakes are coming out of there! *Quote:* I see no sense to it unless it was for a special purpose as you suggest. I can offer a simple explanation. Since the all black 2.0s are so difficult to find its possible that some outfit(repair shop/machine shop) modified them! Its easy to do, all you need is a shorter replacement(onlynikon admits the end part is different than normal)....even Bob is not sure if its factory. The fact remains that there is no way to accomodate a filter/hood/cap and there is a chrome one out there!! Thats not Nikon at all!! the only explanation is if they were special ordered. Can anyone come up with an answere why. It doesn't seem to serve any purpose other than..... Unless there is concrete evidence present that this version was produced, we are speculating!!! Posts: 217 (11/11/2006 10:15 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	No one knows what Nikon produced over the years, just look back at the F2H-250 discovered in 2004, no one ever heard or read about this, since March this year we are 100% sure this is genuine Nikon. It don't seem to me that this 5 cm f2 black has been modified by some technician, why should they do this, it takes more time than the end value of the lens, this is not like (re)painting a black body. The ring that replaces the chrome filter is exactly the same as the other rings, just smaller. And I think that the inner ring is slightly different of a normal ring, so that makes two differences. The enigma stays Hope some day to find the answer.

Bob sent me the photos! The mystery continues! The top filter holder is in fact milled off. Also shown in the photo, a standard all black on left, and a regular black in the middle for comparison. The milled off filter holder appears to be an after-market change, since there is no single batch of numbers, which would have occured in the factory. Who modified it, or for what purpose is unknown. Bob has 5 in black and 1 in chrome reported so far. This modification was not done to fake an all black lens, since one modified lens is chrome.

But the question stays : what use ? are there others ? One reaction said no use for photography as you cant take pictures. But I think you don't need a filter of hood to take pictures ?? I don't think it was adapted for photo copying neither, as in those years I don't believe they used this kind of lenses to make copies ? It is indeed strange, and as you see clearly on Bobs beautiful pictures it is genuine, so probably factory made as all rings match. The search continues. Thanks for helping

This lens is too late for this body, but really points up its mystery! Really unusable for general B&W photography -- since you could not use filters or a sun shade, but here it is mounted on a camera. In fact not even a way to mount a lens cap!

On the other hand it was offered as a SP, but body is S2, and, it was offered WITH a chrome shade... So must try to know more as I don't believe this shade goes with the lens

Chrome rivets Chrome strap lugs Chrome push ring on AR ring etc etc. AND!!! there is no serial number on the camera!!!!!!! Those lenses are getting around, they make no sense but they are everywhere it seems, along the timeline.

Are you kidding me???" The serial number he lists is not a legit number yet you cannot read the one on the camera so is he listing the wrong number? This is NOT a black dial! It is a black painted chrome dial, painted like a black dial including a back distance scale. It has chrome strap lugs, the only one I have ever seen. I know the difference between a 1) black, chome dial (based on a chrome dial body) 2) black, black dial (based on a black dial body) is often confusing. but basically a black black dial has an unpainted speed dial, chrome screws on the face plate, a chrome button in the center of the counter dial, and a chrome edge on the frame line dial, as well as an anodized black distance scale. Both cameras have black lugs and black rivets on the baseplate. Regarding the eBay camera referenced, everything is off paint-wise for a black, chome dial, starting with the chrome lugs, and chrome base rivets. I have contacted the seller about the history of this camera, to see what he knows about it. He says in the ad "100% original?"
