I own and shoot with a zoom-Nikkor 80~200 2.8 ED AIS manual focus monster, and a person on another site who also owns one asked me about two versions of this
lens. I couldn't find any information on two versions(?), but where else to ask but here? Anyone?

Before the AiS 80-200/2.8 ED, there was an Ai 80-200/2.8 ED. This lens has separate rings for zooming and focusing.
See www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html#70-xxPro As far as I know it was only a prototype, although I had a conversation with someone who said he almost bought one, so maybe a few did reach the market. I've never seen one for sale however. Optically the design is similar to a scaled up Ai 80-200/4.5 as it has a similar arrangement of lenses. Perhaps performance did not reach expectations as the AiS 80-200/2.8 ED has a more advanced optical design. |
