kids vs adults... | ||

It is amazing how really boring the "stunningnikon" photos are, none of them reveal the life underneath the smiling simplicity of a portrait on a porch, or a sunset. Just proves to me that new technology will only make sharper photos -- not better ones.
I gave thirty Zenits to inner city kids when I was teaching under Title III in the 70's, and they shot photos that would have made Gary Winogrand jealous. (does anyone remember how primitive a Zenit was?) My kids were much more revealing, photos of family fights, dishes piled in sinks, one amazing group of photos of a mom yelling at the kid photographer! Nikon proves it's easy to shoot a sharp photo, but so hard to know WHEN to shoot the photo or WHERE to point the camera. Gary for those who have not seen his work: ![]() And here is a sampling from the Rangefinder Forum (many of our members using the Nikon RF system), linked from our home page -- many more where these came from. It is hard work to take photos like these wonderful shots: ![]() I chose these shots because of their extraordinary composition. |

I guess there are a lot more going on in the inner city than a small town!! I would love to see what kinds of images would come out if this project was taken place in NYC!

I think it is more about intimacy. Those kids I was referring to were in St. Louis. I have noticed a lot of beginning photographers go out and shoot strangers on the street, rather than working with those at home.

I could have sworn someone was slagging my Zenit... Yes, it was my first SLR, a Zenit EM - Moscow Olympic edition, which I still am happy to report, that I have to this day. Primitive for sure, but a great camera to learn about photography on.

The Zenits were one of the only modern SLRs which were completely manual, long after everything else had too many bells and whistles. They were indeed tough, and stood up to the abuse of 8 to 10 year olds.
And I might add... the dealer, St. Louis Photo, donated them to us, as did Kodak, who supplied us with film. St. Louis Photo in the 60s was a really wonderful store, unbelievable service. |
