Congratulations Fred....quite a find, that's for sure!! It has to have the cloth shutter being such a low number. I read somewhere that the first 60-70 had cloth shutters. I've always wondered why Nippon Kogaku, with their experience with titanium shutters (SP and
S-3) resorted back to the cloth shutter with the introduction of the "F"? A bit of a retro-grade step. Perhaps the original blue-print drawings....2 years earlier...for the "F" supported that camera with a cloth shutter. Any other thoughts? Also, did your 6400031 come with a standard 5cm/f2.0 Nikkor-S. If so, what is the serial #? Cheers, Mike PS- And I thought my #362 was early.....! |

Mike: The SP and the S3 did not gain titanium shutters until after the release of the Nikon F. So it was not a backward step for NK to use cloth shutters in the very first Nikon Fs. I am not sure when the S3 got the titanium shutter, although all the "Olympic" S3s came with Titanium. I believe the SP got the Titanium shutter in August 1959, or thereabouts. WES

My understanding, Wes, was that only about the first 100 cameras had a cloth shutter, and were shipped that way so that the camera could be reviewed before
release. I know for sure it was not over 1000 since I have had Nikons in that range with titan.
Cameras in stores should have had titanium shutters right from the start? |

Sorry if someone thought I was saying that so many Nikon Fs had cloth shutters. I thought only a couple of dozen had cloth shutters. Your explanation sounds
reasonable. WES

Al Brody brought an early F to the convention in New York City, but I don't remember its exact number, maybe someone does? For some reason I thought it was
near 100.

The earliest 'confirmed and photographed' F I know of is #6400008. I also know of #6400012 in an American collection. |
