I wouldn't put too much trust in a rumor like this. What's more interesting, since this thread was originally started, is that Nikon has finally released their first "full frame" DSLR (the D3 sure looks like a winner) and have now become the biggest selling DSLR company in Japan...

About 70% of the photographers at the Olympic Games of 2004 used Canon.
The loss of market share started long before...with eye controlled AF etc.

But one never knows. It appears that Canon's full frame digital (an advantage in depth of field control) gives vignetting (up to four stops) when wide angles are used.
So Nikon's sticking to a DX format sensor (and introducing an 17-55 DX 2.8 ED-IF zoom) is not such a bad move after all. One can be glad that Nikon made the choice...

I have never found that to be the case. The Nikon professional support is great. They have loaned my brother so many lenses this year I was actually a bit surprised.

I have heard that Canon is almost as good, but does not so easily loan equipment. Nikon has a long history of equipment loans.

Here in NYC I still see an equal amount of Nikon and Canon, although I imagine it depends on the city.

I have been using Nikon professionally for over 25 years. When I started, everybody used Nikon. Today I rarely see a journalist with a Nikon. From my own experiences, I can say that Nikon has done a heck of a job alienating the pro market. I have been stunned at the way I have been treated when I have called on several occasions. And why would I want to do that? Nikon and Japanese small appliance producers are really anxious to return to the VCR days, where we all tried to program devices without keyboards. They are so hopeful we will all sell our computers. All this despite endless jokes in the media and movies about programming VCRs!

Its like I had written information from Nikon Japan that there will not be any USA warrantied SP 2005s but guess what?
When the market demands it, Nikon will go along....if they see Leica doing good with their Digital-Module-R(DMR) one would never know.

Hans Braakhuis is in Tokyo at this moment, so let's see with what kind of info he comes back.
The point I tried to make is that Nikon Corporation is meber of a group which might be in danger; and Nikon is only active in the stepper and photography business. 8% of their net sales come from microscopes and measuring products and 3.3% from sport and surveying optics. Canon has more legs to stand on. If Nikon doesn't sell a lot of cameras (like they did with the D70) during the coming 3-5...

Very interesting observation Nico...Looking at Nikon's own track record in their financial statement(PDF file) Fred left on this thread one can see Steady Profit and some growth during the last two years...officially out of red, in my opinion its immature to assume an Industry Giant such as Mistubishi group would drop one of their most recognized brand names let alone a profitable one.

Nico is most likely right, sort of.

There will be no Nikon SLR Cameras someday. While that legacy segment is strong right now, it is not the major segment of their sales.

The future belongs to Sony and Panasonic, and if the past is any indication Panasonic will prevail (as they did with VHS). Cameras are changing into imaging devices, which could be phones, PDAs, or even dedicated cameras. Analog is not going to be forever, anymore than typewriters will never be...

What else does Nikon produce? Like Kodak, Canon and Leica, photography maybe some of there buisness, they also produce other items, with Kodak there main buisness is chemicals and medical imaging equipment. with Leica microscopes, Nikon microscopes and imaging equipment,

At the 2004 Photokina I had an interview with managers (Kamijo-san - Nikon Europe and Kimura-san - president of Nikon Imaging). I don't think Nikon will produce a digital back for the F6 or any other film body, but hopefully I'm wrong.

A digital (perhaps even b/w) FM-like body? Maybe, but I'm not convinced.

Digital rangefinder? Again, I don't belive it until I see it. The market is probably too small, but Nikon have done crazy things before (new versions of their 1950's S3 and SP rangefinders, for example). We'll see.

Nikon will continue to develop and sell small Coolpix-type cameras, but...

How about a digital back for the F6(Leica did it), they probably thought about it when they designed the camera.
Lets say Nico's F mount manual focus or lets get wild, How about a Rangefinder mount Digital(leicas doing it)?
