I have a simple answer. After 50 years, some of the filter rings become loose and easy to come off, I have three 5cm f2.0s and only the one I demonstrated is loose enough so I can just unscrew the filter ring with hand, the other two are tight and do not come off. Another explanation would be filters! somtimes filter won't come off, and as a result the filter and the filter ring unscrew together, as is evident by the fuzzzy picture of the Nikon SP I saw on ebay and posted here....

Amazing, but still hard to believe. Would have loved to see sharper pictures.
And do I see reflexion on glass in the filter ring ?

Question : why should one take of the filter ring ?
This kind of lens is found all over the world, and also without filter ring, so I cannot imagine that one person should
have done this work, and sent lenses all over the worldl.

Lens come to me....
what Kiu says is right.
Only a normal 50 mm f2 Hc lens with a not strong glue on the chrome ring!!!
My , rare piece, dream is definitively broken

Kui I just never kept a 50 f2 to try it on, but I have been saying this all along. Thanks for proving it. On the 50 1.4 the chrome ring is part of the front lens group and comes out with the glass, on the 50 f2 is it just cemented in (or screwed tightly).

Kiu, i have found one of this "no chrome ring" 50 mm F2.
So this is a bluff? Is only a normal 50 mm without chrome ring? i have tryed to remove the chrome ring from one of my 50 mm black but it is very strong attached.
There is a particulary 50 mm F2 with removable ring or i have bouth a normal 50 mm black with loosed ring?

Soooooo, I took one of my 5cm f2s and tuned the filter ring counterclockwise:

Notice the filter ring.

Viola...a black 5cm F2....looks like the one Bob posted,...

I have asked the seller to send me some close up images of the lens but he just can not do it! He started this auction with $9.95 and all of a sudden, he changed it to BIN for $1,750.00!!

This lens is discussed in Bobs new book, so Bob will not risk his reputation if he is not sure about the rarety of this lens, so it is not a simple take off of the filterring, but they must have been factory made. Why is still a guess

I don't doubt Stephens meaning, that you can take off the filter ring

but when you look at those lenses without filterring, how can you screw in a filter ring ??
I can hardly believe lenses with filter ring that has been taken out are the same as those like in the picture of
Bob, I am sure both are different. One is normal lens with screwed out filter ring
the others (where we are talkinng about) are made without filter ring.

if it takes only 30 seconds...

5cm f2 lens sn 747097 there is a recessed filter ring that is approx. 1.51 inch or 37.75mm, the threads are visible, but I don't know anyone that made a filter that size. lens weighs 4.5 oz. came on nikon sp 6203333,

The filter ring on the 1.4 is not seperate, but part of the front element group, so it cannot come off.

Someday someone will give me a black and chrome 50 F2 of a near serial number, I will take it apart and see what gives.

If the filter ring is seperate then it's obvious... if one piece then the mystery deepens.

Question...

If the missing filter ring fell off from some exotic combination of heat and expanding metals, then how come this rather strange happening has NEVER been reported on a black 50/1.4? Or any black lens with a chrome filter ring? Why is this only found on a FEW 50/f2 lenses? And 2 chrome ones as well?

Sorry fellows, but that explanation really taxes the imagination.

(Right up there with the world being round, which of course wasn't proven until 1969 when...

I found a 5 cm f2 in black, in hte 74 xx range, but this lens has NO chrome filter ring, not even a filter ring at all.

If you compare it with a normal black 5 cm f 2, you can see that instead of that chrome filter ring, there is a fitting black ring, but only the same hight as the other rings.
The inside ring (closest to the lens glass) has not the same shape as on a normal black, it is slightly different

It seems that some lenses lilke this were produced, but does any...
