Hi Scott;

No problem.... Yes, you count the outer filter retaining ring as the 3rd. piece of these outfits. This shade outfit is also found in a nice black finish for the 5cm/f1.4 Nikkor, and, I think, the 5cm/f2.0 Nikkor. These black shade outfits (also 3-piece) are quite scarce...and are gorgeous! It is beleived that they were brought out in conjunction with the first black standard Nikkors and/or black S2 bodies combinations.

Looking more carefully at the auction you mentioned, the shade does look different, in fact it looks like it's one piece.

How do I tell one from the other by looking at a photo? That is, a 2-piece 43mm for a 50/1.4 from a 2-piece 43mm for a 28/3.5? I have a chrome shade that came with my 28mm lens and it looks like the one in the auction that I linked to. Looking over the shades...

Hi Scott;

The shade you have pointed out here is a very common chrome 3-piece screw-in shade for a 5 cm/f1.4 Nikkor...not a 2.8 cm.f3.5 shade (or a 2.1 cm/f4.0) as we're discussing here.

Sold last month at 1/10 the price. Not boxed, but it looks very nice, with case. Mistakenly described as for the 50/1.4.

WOW....the e-bay description even had it incorrectly described as a "Nikon F Hood with Logo". The shade for the SLR version has an "F"....not a logo.

I'm amazed at the 2000 price......! Today's market....probably $2,500-$3,000. max. Still...not bad!

i sold the hood a couple years ago with a 2.8cm black lens for $1400, i thought the hood would be worth $800-1000 in todays market.

Hi Bob;

I can understand that the metal shade being rarer than the plastic version, if nothing else, for its design and durability over its plastic counterpart. The plastic shade is a bit of a joke in practical use. You rest it down on a table mounted on a 5cm/f1.1 attached and in most cases the shade snaps off, crashing the lens and camera down on the table.....those threads are so finely machined, and not deep!

That was a shock as the 'normal' selling price for the plastic version has been about $2500 for some time. Now the metal version has changed hands at $4500, which makes a bit more sense.

Do you remember the shade for the 21 that went for $5000??? Only other confirmed price i have for it is $1500 about 8 years ago. i guess I better keep mine in the vault.

Do you remember what has to be the record price paid for a lens shade? It happened about 5-6 years ago on e-bay....a 5cm/1.1 plastic shade, in the leather case, in the original box (but without the 62mm filter that screws into the top lid of the leather case).....sold to a Japanese buyer for $5,001.00 USD. He outbid the other frantic bidder by $1.00 to win it.

Now that's incredible!
