I was wondering if it might be interesting to the Nikon community to put together a discussion thread on more common cameras in collections that have an
interesting history or background.

I realize that this is a large topic but perhaps one of interest to everyone. I was going over my collection recently and realized that cameras are usually
collectible due to their rarity. However another interesting topic are the common cameras that have an interesting or obscure history.

Hi Wes;

My apologies on the spelling of one of my favorite towns...Carmel (not Camel) CA. I recall years ago (mid-1970's) going into a camera store on the main
street (no longer there) that runs down to that beautiful white sand beach.....and there was the man himself...Ansel Adams.... coming out of the store looking
very casual.
He was very recognizable!

Cheers,

Richard,

Seeing your cassette with a sticker on it "Morse" reminded me of a CU-1 focusing unit I bought a few months ago. I thought they were just some
foolish stickers, and spent hours prying them off with my fingernails.

I think it's a great idea. I find the "provenance" of a camera much more interesting than the nuts and bolts of serial numbers. The legacy of a
news camera that photographed historical events, wars and such. Even celebrity cameras such as those owned by Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis or Sammy Davis Jr.
Imagine where those cameras have been and what they saw.

Remember the Nikon S that belonged to Ansel Adams? He used this camera to shoot photos for a coffee- table book "The Hawaiian Island". This
camera had great providance (sp?) as there was a receipt from a Camel, CA camera store where Adams took it in for repairs/maintenance. The receipt had the
camera/lens serial numbers.

Fred, I beleive that you tried contacting the estate executors about this camera but alas, one of the estate beneficiaries decided to keep it in...

Mike you raise an interesting point. Not much value has been assigned to many cameras because it was impossible to verify them, with a receipt or other proof.

The most interesting ones to me have been News cameras, but the Nikons owned by Sammy Davis Jr. have been widely published.
