Most probably it was removed because it was being used with an AF camera, the ear prongs would "catch" the lower prism housing on some of the AF cameras.
It will work fine for you.
If you really have to have it right,I believe you can get the part from Nikon.

If you need such a prong for a lens that lost one or has a damaged one, it is obvious that you cannibalize a lens that doesnot need it.Most of these lenses were sold in the F3 era, and the cameras of those days did not need them.image

Is this altered after purchase or some lenses come without a meter coupler? Simple question. I just bought this lens from eBay and found the aperture prong is missing. Is this a problem? I mainly use FM3a, F3 may be D200 in future.
